.ng

The .ng top-level domain is the country-code domain (ccTLD) for Nigeria. In the IANA Root Zone Database, .ng is listed with a registration date of 1995-03-15, and its designated manager is the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA).
From a practical standpoint, .ng supports both direct registrations under .ng and registrations under several second-level domains (for example, .com.ng, .org.ng, .net.ng, and others), with different rules depending on the category.

What is .ng domain?

A .ng domain is a Nigeria-associated internet address that can be used for local presence, branding, and country targeting. According to NiRA’s Domain Name Policy, .ng itself is an “Open” space (no restrictions on applicant status), alongside open second-level options like .com.ng, .org.ng, .net.ng, .mobi.ng, .name.ng, and .i.ng.
If you’re doing SEO and geo-targeting, Google notes that ccTLDs are tied to specific countries and provide a strong signal that a site is intended for that country.

.ng domain peculiar traits

Key characteristics of the .ng namespace are set by NiRA policies:

  • Open vs Closed categories. NiRA distinguishes open spaces (like .ng, .com.ng, .org.ng, etc.) from Closed SLDs where extra eligibility requirements apply.

  • Structured options for different use cases. NiRA’s Appendix A lists common purposes (commercial: .com.ng, non-profit: .org.ng, education: .edu.ng and .sch.ng, government: .gov.ng, military: .mil.ng, etc.).

  • Domain-hack potential with .i.ng. NiRA explicitly includes .i.ng as an open domain space and even gives an example showing it can be used creatively (e.g., words ending in “-ing”).

.ng domain usage advantages

Registering a .ng domain can be attractive for:

  • Local trust & country association for Nigerian-focused projects, since ccTLDs are country-coded.

  • Multiple naming formats: you can choose a short direct example.ng or a category-based example.com.ng / example.org.ng, depending on your project and eligibility.

  • Global availability in Open spaces (no restrictions on applicant status for the listed Open SLDs/TLD).

.ng zone domain name registration: procedure’s technical sides

Below are the core technical/registration rules that come directly from NiRA documents:

  • Where registrations go through. Applications for registration are made to NiRA by a registrar on behalf of the registrant.

  • Registration term. A registrant selects a registration period from 1 to 5 years, and renewals can also be 1 to 5 years.

  • First-come, first-served. NiRA registers compliant names on a first come, first served basis.

  • Allowed characters (LDH). A label may contain only a-z, 0-9, and hyphens; it can’t start/end with a hyphen; and it cannot be only numeric.

  • IDN note. NiRA states it does not offer IDNs “for now”, and names starting with “xn--” may not be registered.

  • Length constraints (as stated by NiRA). NiRA’s policy (version 1.5, Oct 2021) sets a limit that the full domain name example (including 2LD + TLD) may not be more than 64 characters, with a note that longer names may be allowed in the future.

  • Reserved/restricted/premium names. NiRA also reserves the right to maintain lists of offensive, restricted, geographical, premium, and trademark-conflicting names that can be rejected or withdrawn.

Technical lookup services for .ng (IANA listing) include WHOIS and RDAP endpoints.

.ng zone domain registrar: why is it recommended to buy a .ng domain via AlexHost?

If you register .ng through a hosting provider’s domain service, the practical value is convenience: you can check availability, pick a registration period (1–5 years), and manage renewals in one place, while the registry rules remain those of NiRA.
Also, remember: keeping registrant data accurate matters — NiRA’s registrant agreement requires that registration information stays complete and accurate, and NiRA can request confirmation.

How much is .ng domain per year?

Pricing for .ng domains varies by:

  • the exact space you choose (.ng vs .com.ng vs other SLDs),

  • the registration term (1–5 years),

  • and the registrar’s pricing model.

So the honest answer is: check the live price in the checkout for the specific format you want.

What is required for .ng domain?

At minimum, you’ll need:

  • a chosen domain name that complies with NiRA rules (characters/length/restrictions),

  • selection of registration term (1–5 years),

  • registrant details that are kept accurate and up-to-date.

If you register under a Closed SLD (for example, .gov.ng, .mil.ng, .edu.ng, .sch.ng), additional eligibility rules apply per the relevant SLD rules.

What sites suit .ng zone domain?

.ng and its open second-level options are commonly suitable for:

  • Businesses and commercial services (often via .com.ng).

  • Non-profits and public service initiatives (often via .org.ng).

  • Personal branding (via .name.ng, which is intended as a personal namespace and has specific rules).

  • Local Nigerian projects where country association is a goal (ccTLD is a strong locale signal).

Who is permitted to register .ng domain?

For Open spaces (including .ng itself), NiRA states it does not impose restrictions on applicant status.
For Closed SLDs, eligibility is restricted and governed by the specific SLD requirements (for example, .edu.ng is reserved for approved/accredited tertiary institutions).
